Range - Why generalists triumph in a specialized world

Range is a book I definitely would recommend to anyone struggling with the question what their core skills and competencies are - even if they have evidance to the contrary. A lot of really interesting examples and stories. Also, eventually an uplifting core message: Don’t feel behind. And it strongly supports my belief that generalists aren’t second-class citizens to specialized experts in narrow fields. Don’t be afraid if you get bored by stuff and look for new challenges elsewhere. People with broad interests are more creative and innovative - not difficult to understand and accept.

Also interesting: Interdisciplinary research is underfunded, often misunderstood, undervalued - but after around 15 years of publication papers rise to the top. Most specialized research fields (e.g. molecular biology) we have today even started out as interdisciplinary grey areas.

I definitely learned a lot!
